Surgical scissors are excellent surgical instruments for disection and for blunt dissection. Most individuals are right-handed which is why many surgical scissors are created by the manufacturing company this way. Having a thumb-ring grip gives the greatest control and movability that gives maximal closing, shear and torque forces with a natural grip-ping movement of the right hand.

Though you will find several shapes & sizes of surgical scissors, each having the name of a prominent surgeon, there are 2 types for this: those with straight blades and those with curved blades.

Surgical scissors with curved blades offer directional flexibilty, visibility and the means to cut tissue in a smooth curve easily. The 15-20 degree scale of motion and visibility of structures over that found with straight surgical scissors. Its a good idea to use curved surgical scissors to enter a wound horizontally with good visibility. Straight surgical scissors have a mechanical advantage for cutting tough tissue. In some situations, straight surgical scissors give more of an accurate cut as contrast to the curved ones. Curved surgical scissors have 30 to 40 degree more mobility & visibility as opposed straight ones.

A significant selection of bone cutters are necessary surgical scissors for targeted purposes. This is because the counter-efforts that bone does for cutting, a plamed grip with surgical instruments, in certain sitiutions with both hands, is neccessary as oppossed to the finger grip which is used with other surgical scissors. The jaws of bone-cutting medical tools close more or less suddenly under a large amount of tension as the bone fragments separate. The tips of the blades, therefore, should be clear of any structure you do not desire to contain in the cut. For example, When using rib cutters its mostly customary to point the shears perpendicular to the chest wall with the open blades beside rather than aimed toward the intercostals bundle. After you start a bite using the bone rongeurs, kerrisons or other cutters, all tensions directed into the wound is relaxed, so when the bite is completed, the medical tools will not slip any deeper. When the only tension on the tissue is between the jaws of the surgical instruments, security is then gained.

Surgical scissors can cut flaccid tissue successfully since the tissue is stabilized between the scissor blades. When surgical scissors cut, they give power, torque and shear to give an exact cut. When you push slice you give a more smooth cut along the surface. "chewing" results in a crushed, jagged wound from tissue trapped between the blades of the surgical scissors lacking in shear and torque forces.

When your cutting sutures with your scissor tip, search for the knot in between the slightly spread blades, as opposed to under your scissors. Use the left hand, the patient's body, or some other structure thats stable as a fulcrum to steady the scissors when making fragile cuts or when cutting sutures held by another person. When cutting a row of sutures, place the structure in your left hand do this so the single one can "taut" as you cut it and so that the cut sutures are held out of the way.

Blunt cutting can be achieved by spreading scissor blades between tissue planes or by using the surgical scissors as a rake or probe. Blind dissection is sometimes useful between tissue planes away from vital structures. Curved surgical scissors offer greater maneuverability and visibility, whereas straight surgical scissors provide the greatest mechanical benefit when cutting tough, thick tissue.
