Sonography school admissions requirements vary from one school to the next, and they may also depend largely on what state you live in and what specific degree or certificate you're working towards. There are diplomas, certificates, associate's degrees and bachelor's degrees for students aspiring to enter the sonography field, but these typically will only qualify the graduate for entry level positions, such as sonography assistants, technicians and technologists. If you want to become a diagnostic medical sonographer, you will need to complete a Diagnostic Medical Sonography degree. The following information should provide a general idea of the requirements that you should expect if you are applying to this type of program.

Requirements to Apply for a Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program

Before you can apply to a specialized program in a school of diagnostic medical sonography, you will likely need to have completed a degree from a college or allied health school. Some applicants are already working in the health care field and seeking to change careers, and others are fresh out of a college program. Typically, applicants must fulfill at least one of the following requirements before they are eligible to begin the diagnostic medical sonography program:

- Completion of a two-year allied health or radiology program at a CAAHEA-accredited school

- Currently working in the professional field as a licensed or registered radiologic technologist

- Graduate of any four-year degree program that includes prerequisite courses in math, physics and science

Regardless of the type of program that you have completed before applying to a diagnostic medical sonography program, you will need to have some prerequisite college courses under your belt to qualify. These typically include Anatomy, Biology, Communications, Math, Introduction to Patient Care, Medical Terminology, Physics and Physiology. You must be at least enrolled in these courses at the time you apply, if you haven't finished them already. You will need to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in these prerequisite courses in order to qualify for most diagnostic medical sonography programs at accredited institutions of higher learning.

Some additional requirements may include being observed by a sonographer in a clinical setting and obtaining documentation, such as letters of recommendation and school transcripts from previous educational institutions. Most schools will also require you to fill out a detailed application and write a statement of purpose that explains why you want to enter into this professional field and what you have to offer.
